A green three-year old Lorelei in 1995.

Photos taken in 1996, as a 4 year old.

Our first trip to the UK in 1993 marked the year we re-assessed our breeding program and imported the first two of many UK bred ponies that followed. We visited several UK farms, but of all that we saw, we were most impressed with the ponies we saw at the Ceulan Stud in Wales. The ponies bred by Dr. Wynne Davies had the mountain pony look we loved, tremendous bone and substance, and without a doubt, were the friendliest. We purchased two yearling fillies, Ceulan Lorelei and Ceulan (J) Bounce, who became the foundation mares of our line of imported ponies.

When we look back at the photos of Lorelei, taken that day in the pasture at Ceulan, we wonder what we saw in that hay-seed little yearling! Whether it was an astute ability to see raw quality or whether Lorelei simply told us she wanted to come to our home, we will never know. The years that have followed, with what she has accomplished in her own show career, and the foals she has produced, are confirmation that we made a wise choice when we bought this mare.

Darci and Lorelei at a show in 1998, with her first foal, Gaslight Lili. Lorelei was a "modern mother" who was very comfortable leaving her in "day care" with me at the trailer while she went out and worked, but if I ever walked her baby away from her... she went berserk!

Division Champion in both English Pleasure and Western A/B Pleasure/Adults, having won all six performance classes.

A/Reserve Supreme (640 entries); City of Swansea—Champion Section A/Supreme Welsh; Bath and West—Champion Section A from 100 entries, followed by Horse of the Year Show Champion of Champions Templeton qualifier, from 1,200 total entries. It is very rare that a Welsh qualifies for the Horse of the Year Show, but Taran not only qualified, he was also judged the Templeton Reserve Supreme Champion Pony of the Year at Wembley. Taran has over 49 championships to his credit. He was ranked 5th in the UK Sire Ratings in 1998.

DAM: Produced Ceulan Lucy (x Trefaes Taran), 1st Royal Welsh, 1992; *Ceulan Lwcus (x Twyford Sprig), multiple winner of Grand & Supreme Welsh Championships, under UK and USA judges. Winner of the Produce of Dam class, ‘96 Sierra Gold Classic & ‘97 WWNat’l.. Lisvane Lotus Blossom LOM is the first pony, not in residence in the USA, to receive an LOM from the WPCSA. Her only three produce in the USA, *Ceulan Lorelei, *Ceulan Lwcus and *Ceulan Lydia provided the points needed to earn a Dam LOM for her in 2002.

Lorelei's last show was in 2001. On the trip home from WA, she seemed slightly lame, so our friend who was transporting her kept her at her farm for 6 weeks to rest up. The lameness persisted after she returned home, and a diagnosis of acute laminitis was made. That began a long and bitter struggle with the condition, from which she never fully recovered. We learned a lot about laminitis and insulin resistance while treating her, which has been a benefit to all of our ponies. But for Lorelei, it marked the end of a brilliant, but too-short show and performance career.

We had trouble getting Lorelei in foal for several years. Having sold the only filly she had produced for us, we were afraid we would lose her lines forever. We were able to repurchase her only intact son, Gaslight Lancelot, who was in MI since he was sold as a weanling. As soon as Lance was on his way home to SoCA, Lorelei miraculously was checked in foal, and the following year, produced a spectacular filly. In 2009, she and her new filly made the trip to Oregon to join the rest of the Gaslight ponies on our new farm.

Following her last foal in 2010, we made the decision not to breed her again. Carrying that foal through the previous winter had been very hard on her. Although she never lost her love of food or the twinkle in her eye, we knew that the laminitis had won. As winter was approaching, we made the difficult decision to put her down, rather than subject her to another long and bitter winter. On October 11, 2011, our wonderful *Ceulan Lorelei was humanely euthanized and laid to rest in the pasture by our pond. We planted a maple tree over her resting place, a tree that will light up that pasture each Fall with its brilliant red leaves, the way Lorelei lit up our lives for so many years.

Laminitis ended Lorelei's bid for an Individual LOM, which she was so close to achieving. Until we could secure the required legs and points for a Dam LOM, we decided to retain and show all three of her produce that we owned. Gaslight Lancelot earned the first "leg," while Gaslight Lillith earned the second and all the extra points needed. In 2011, her yearling son, Gaslight Lyric, was acqquiring points for a leg, but an older full brother, Gaslight London Fog, was brought out to show on the Welsh circuit as a favor to us, and competed the 3rd and final log for Lorelei's Dam LOM. Cheated out of her own LOM, we are thrilled that the achievements of her sons and daughters have made it possible for her to wear the title after her name, and to be recognized for the true champion that she always was.

NEWS FLASH!!!
Sold as a yearling, Lance returned at the end of 2007. Thank you to Thomas Bainbridge for parting with him. We were THRILLED to be able to re-purchase this lovely son of Lwcus and Lorelei. He went into training in 2008 and began a serious show career in 2009, completing the first "leg" for his dam's LOM. Since Lorelei has now been awarded her Dam LOM, and because they are too closely related to our other ponies, Lance and full brother Lyric are offered for sale. We will retain only one of them. Lance stands at stud on our farm in Oregon until sold.
