July 2011 - Pictured as a yearling with David Davies at Ceulan Stud in Wales.
We had known for a long time that, to advance our breeding program, we would need an outcross stallion for the Lwcus daughters we had retained. After moving all our ponies to the Oregon farm in January 2009, we spent the next two years just settling in and adjusting to new routines. In the summer of 2011, David received an email from Dr. Wynne Davies, suggesting that we might look at his website, that he had two colts that year which he felt were the best he had produced since Lwcus. David mentioned it to me, but I didn't immediately act on it. After several weeks went by, David asked if I had looked at the colts yet. I had been busy with work, and though we knew we needed the outcross, I hadn't been ready yet to actively look for one. Neverthless, at David's urging, I looked to see what he had.

The two colts were nice, but neither made my heart "sing" the way Lwcus did when I saw his photo at 2 days of age. I emailed back with a few questions, one of which was how cast-in-stone were their names, as I wasn't excited about either name. What I got back from Dr. Wynn was a photo of his son, David, with a yearling colt that he had retained the previous year to show. They were offering him to us if we were interested. It was instant love. His pedigree included one line to Sprig on the bottom, but was other wise a total oputcross for us, bringing in some good, old Friars. His golden color was not the main reason I loved him, but it was certainly "icing-on-the-cake! His name was acceptable, and more fitting for a stallion.

An agreement was made, pending our seeing him in person when we made our annual trip for the Royal Welsh, to make certain that his temperament and disposition was to our liking. We knew he would have the movement we want, but having been spoiled by Lwcus and his kind temperament, we wanted to make certain that this new colt was going to fit into our family and our program. We should not have worried. Cappuccino had the same quiet and non-aggressive temperament that we want in our ponies. The sale was finalized.

Home at last in Oregon - Photos taken 11/29/2011 In November 2011, Cappuccino began the long journey from Wales, via Amsterdam, through Toronto, and then across country to his new home in Oregon. At every stop of the way, everyone who handled him kept emailing reports about him, telling us what a "clown" he was, "too much personality" for such a small equine, a "joy to handle, more of a dog than a pony, would be in your lap if you'd let him..." Katja, the groom who accompanied him on the flight from Amsterdam, told us that he was her special buddy on the flight, and was the most people-oriented equine she had ever flown with. The agent from Perry Transport, who was my contact while he was in Toronto, told me when he left, that of all the thousands of horses and ponies that had come through their facility in the years she had worked there, Cappuccino was one she would always remember.
