On lease from Sarah and Steve Dickmeyer, EOS Welsh Ponies

When Sarah and Steve Dickmeyer bought their first Welsh pony from us, for their daughter Emily, it never occurred to us that the relationship would blossom into a wonderful friendship, or that this first pony would be the catalyst that would send them on a journey to Wales and the foundation for their very successful EOS breeding program. We saw them annually at the Royal Welsh Show, as they had come to enjoy the event as much as we had. In 2002, while they were attending the Royal Welsh and Centenary shows, Steve and Sarah attended a private auction at Randan Stud. It was there that Sarah fell in love with a lovely Section A broodmare, Randan Absolutely Fabulous, who had a filly at her side and was again in foal. Her intense Coed Coch pedigree as well as her Type impressed Sarah, and by the end of the bidding, the bay roan mare and her filly were on their way to America.

We loved this mare from the day we saw her. "Fineen" as she came to be called, had everything we wanted in a mare, especially the kind, gentle disposition. We were honored when Sarah bred her to our senior stallion, *Ceulan Lwcus LOM/AOE/OD. She produced a chestnut filly from that breeding, named EOS ALL About Fayline because of her fawn-like quality. She produced several more fillies for them by their sire, *Wharley Magic Flute LOM. Fineen was a spectacular producer, one we would have loved to own.

Middle and Right: Fineen enjoying the tall Oregon grass on the farm, Spring 2011.

After we moved out of southern California to our Oregon farm, we only saw the Dickmeyers at shows. In the Spring of 2010, we received an email from Sarah, offering to lease Fineen to us, since they were not going to be breeding her for awhile. We were stunned at our fortune and jumped at the opportunity. Fineen settled in quite well, and appeared pleased to have a pasture that was green again. Oregon probably looked more like her home in Wales! She settled easily after she was covered. Having only produced fillies for the Dickmeyers and had only one colt in Wales, we were hoping for a filly that we would be able to retain after Fineen returned home after the lease.

In June 2011, Fineen produced her first foal for us... a chestnut roan colt by *Ceulan Lwcus LOM/AOE/OD. Having wanted a filly to retain, we were initially disappointed, but then we really looked hard at this colt. He was big, upright, a gorgeous head and eye, and was full of the "look at me" presence. He KNEW he was special! And then we saw him trot! This was a stallion prospect without question, and needed a special "stallion" name. We named him Gaslight Absolut.

Absolut showed twice as a foal. We often have to scramble to get enough handlers for all of our ponies when we show. Because Fineen was so quiet and easy to handle, we were able to trust her with a novice handler. At one show, Megan Burtness (Bridlewood)and Gerald Verkuyl (Goldhills) kindly lent a hand to help us get all our ponies in the ring. Shown by two very skilled exhibitors, Fineen and her young colt put on a display that was truly breathtaking. Absolut left the arena that day, having won the Reserve Grand Champion Section A title at 7 weeks of age.

Fineen is again in foal to Lwcus and is expected to foal in late 2012. We are hoping for the filly to retain, since we don't know how many more foals this wonderful mare has in her and we want to make sure we have her lines to carry on. Though we would consider selling him to a Welsh show home only, we will likely retain Absolut to show and promote ourselves, even though he is related to all of our Lwcus daughters. He is possibly the best colt we have ever produced.
