"Rocky" is the first foal of a mare we imported from England. Wharley ponies are heavily Coed Coch and old Revel breeding, which we believed would blend well with our Ceulan lines. She was bred by the late Bettie Howe, who was generally recognized as for creating the market for Section A Welsh Ponies in the very competative field of Leading Rein. Her Wharley ponies competed not only in halter divisions, but she promoted them heavily in performance in the Mountain and Moreland shows in the UK.

We had been looking for an outcross colt or stallion in the UK, but when Rocky was foaled, we saw potential that we wanted to develop. Although he had been sold inutero, his buyer was gracious enough to accept an offer we made to substitute Bounce's filly, which we had intended to retain.

In February 2007, we sent Rocky to Gerald Verkuyl for professional training in harness. He returned in June, after the SLWPA Summer Gold Show, where he competed in his first performance classes, with Gerald as the Whip, bringing home the Small Pony Division Reserve Champion Pleasure Driving title. He continued to show in harness throughout the 2007 show season.

Rocky became my own "project" to drive and show. I would LOVE to say that we were good enough from the very beginning to set the world on fire with our brilliance, but it was not the case.... a young, green stallion being driven by an old, green driver would not have been the combination one would want to enter a show ring with other ponies, but Rocky's manners and gentle disposition gave me the confidence to drive him alone... successfully. Rocky was an testament to the mind and disposition that his sire stamps onto his offspring.

In the beginning, we were "proudly last" in almost every class, occasionally placing second-to-last, which helped assess our progress. At the Hallowe'en Haunt in 2007, our fourth show together, I experienced a personal "high" when we were 2nd in the working carriage class, followed by winning the class with the test, and even with fourth in the Stakes class (he ran out of gas!), we tied for Reserve Division Champion. We were offered a coin toss or a work-off, and I wanted the latter, to either win or lose the title fair-and-square. The work-off was decided in favor of the other pony, who had a bit more life left in him, but I couldn't have been prouder of our "almost Reserve Champion" performance! As I continued to work and show him, our standings in the classes improved, but more importantly, he gave me the confidence to be an active participant in this sport that we love.

When we relocated to our new farm in southern Oregon, I had all the best intentions to continue driving and showing him. Unfortunately, since the downturn in the economy in 2008, I am committed to working full time (plus) until our SoCA home sells. As a result, Rocky has been too idle. In that he is too related to most of my mares, I have been seriously considering gelding him, so that he can get out into a herd situation to enjoy just being a pony until I have the time to enjoy driving him again. Before I do that, however, I am reluctantly offering him for sale, in case there is a breeder interested in his Type and bloodlines who could put them to use. He is ONLY for sale to a Welsh show home.

Rocky is available to outside mares on a limited basis until gelded or sold.
